The science behind the blossom

Yellow star thistle (Centaurea solstitialis) belongs to the sunflower family, Asteraceae. Its deep taproot can reach more than three feet into the soil, helping it continue growing through California’s dry summers after many other annual plants have dried out.

Its bright yellow flower heads provide pollen and nectar, making it an important late-season food source for California honey bees. Originally native to Eurasia, yellow star thistle is now widespread in California.
